Top seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan won the women’s singles title at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) German Open in Mülheim today after overcoming China’s Chen Yufei.

The men’s singles title at the Innogy Sporthalle provided more of a surprise as Chinese Taipei’s fourth seed Chou Tien Chen - who had ended the run of Japanese giantkiller Kenta Nishimoto in the semi-finals - beat Hong Kong’s Ng Ka Long Angus.

Yamaguchi, who had taken just 37 minutes to win her semi-final, required 53 minutes to defeat the fourth seeded Chen, coming through 21-19, 6-21, 21-12 in this HSBC BWF World Tour Super 300 tournament.

Chou’s final was even more closely fought – he came through 21-19, 18-21, 21-18 in 84 minutes. 

The men’s doubles title went to Japan’s Takuto Inoue and Yuki Kaneko, who defeated Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto of Indonesia  21-16, 21-18.

Japan also took the women’s doubles thanks to Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota, who beat China’s Huang Dongping and Yu Zheng 18-21, 21-14, 21-6.

The mixed doubles title went to Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Jemie Lal of Malaysia, who defeated Denmark's Niclas Nøhr and Sara Thygesen 21-14, 22-20.
