The Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF) has entered into a partnership with the Jordanian Taekwondo Federation (JTF) which will see both parties cooperate in the management of the Academy at the Azraq Refugee Camp.

Under the deal, the JTF will become the "local focal point of coordination" for the THF project at the camp, which is home to thousands of Syrian refugees.

A new facility is currently under construction at the camp, which is expected to be finished by the end of this month.

It means the academy's work with young refugees who have fled from conflict will expand in terms of activity and training.

The JTF's help with coordinating this will be "instrumental", the THF said.

"Through this agreement, the two organisations make a strong commitment to collaborate in promoting taekwondo as a powerful tool for peace, social development as well as social integration, a point of view strongly advocated by their mother organisation, World Taekwondo, which also supports the project since its launch in early 2016," the THF said.

World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue officially announced his plan to establish the THF in his speech at the United Nations headquarters in New York City, on the 2015 International Day of Peace.

Its mission is to teach taekwondo and stage educational programmes with refugees and displaced people around the world.

As well as Jordan, projects are underway in countries such as Rwanda, Turkey, Djibouti and Nepal.

There are currently more than 70 students who attend weekly training sessions covering both technical taekwondo and educational activities at Azraq.

Jordan won the first Olympic medal in its history at Rio 2016 when Ahmad Abu-Ghaush clinched gold in the men's taekwondo 68 kilograms division.
