Indian swimming coach Prasanta Karmakar has been handed a three-year ban by the India Paralympic Committee (PCI) after female swimmers say they were filmed at their National Championships last year.

The former Para-swimmer turned coach was accused of asking an associate to film female swimmers during the National Para Swimming Championship, which took place in Jaipur from March 31 to April 3.

When questioned after objections from parents, the associate reportedly told the PCI's chair of Para-swimming, VK Dabas, that Karmakar has requested they film the swimmers.

It was then alleged that Karmakar was found taking videos of female swimmers with a camera on a tripod.

The PCI state he refused to delete the videos during an argument with officials.

"A written complaint regarding acts of misconduct, misbehaviour and manhandling was lodged against the 2010 Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist," a PCI statement read.

"Karmakar was called by the chairman wherein he, in full anger, asked the chairman and other office-bearers of the PCI why they were stopping his man from making the video.

"He was told that the act is being objected to by the parents of the swimmers.

"Karmakar asked the PCI office-bearers to show written objections.

"The objecting parents immediately submitted their written complaints.

"Karmakar argued with Dabas and Mahipal Singh Arya from Haryana saying that he was an Arjuna awardee and refused to delete the video recordings of the swimmers."

The PCI disciplinary report stated that the coach was then detained by police.

He was later released after agreeing to delete the videos taken by him and his associate.

Karmakar has now been banned for three years from the sport.

"Having taken into consideration the act, conduct, behaviour, response of Mr. Prasanta Karmakar and the gravity of events, Mr. Prasanta Karmakar, swimming, be suspended and is hereby suspended from participation and him being sponsored in any sports event by the PCI for a period of three years," the PCI stated.

"Recommendation be also made to his to his employer, i.e. Haryana Sports department, to take strict disciplinary action against him for his above intentional wrongdoings, misbehaviour and indiscipline."

Karmakar earned a bronze medal in the men's S9 50 metres freestyle event at the Delhi 2010 Commonwealth Games, the first medal India had earned in the swimming pool at their home multi-sport event.

He is also a multiple Asian Games medallist and took over as India's Para-swimming coach in 2016.
