Suriname were crowned Pan American Championship winners as Dominican Republic claimed a vital win over Brazil to secure qualification to the International Korfball Federation (IKF) World Championship.

Suriname, newcomers to the tournament after only being accepted as the latest members of the IKF last August, took a 100 per cent record into their final fixture in the Colombian city Cali.

They were clear favourites against Costa Rica, who had suffered four straight losses in the tournament.

A strong performance saw Suriname live up to expectations, as they stormed to a 23-3 win to triumph at the tournament on their debut appearance.

Dominican Republic and Brazil headed into their match at the Coliseo Mundialista, Escuela Nacional del Deporte with three wins and a defeat to their names.

It left the teams tied for second place in the standings and going head-to-head for the final World Championship berth, with Suriname having already booked their place.

Brazil, who were the defending Pan American champions, would ultimately fall short in their clash.

Hosts Colombia ended their participation on a high, as they secured an 11-7 win over Argentina in their final match.

It saw them finish in fourth place, with two wins and three defeats.

The World Championships will take place next year in the South Africa city Durban.
