Welsh Netball have announced that Australian Julie Hoornweg has been appointed as interim head coach of the Wales team.

Along with her role as Wales head coach, Hoornweg will be in charge of the Celtic Dragons side.

It means she will be in charge of the country at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games in April.

Welsh Netball chief executive Sarah Jones said she was pleased to have secured Hoornweg's services.

"It is absolutely fantastic for Wales and Celtic Dragons that we are able to welcome Julie to the coaching team," she said.

"Julie has an exceptional track record as a head coach that spans the last two decades.

"Her range of experience across the netball world will be hugely beneficial to our players in both the Superleague season and the Commonwealth Games.

"Julie's appointment is interim and we are happy that Julie was able to commit to Wales and Celtic Dragons at short notice.

"Julie will take the lead for the Superleague season and the Commonwealth Games before returning to her family in Australia at the end of the season."

Hoornweg, who will replace Trish Wilcox as Welsh coach, began her netball playing career in Australia before moving into coaching, eventually taking the reigns of the Fijian national team in 1997.

She was awarded the Fiji Coach of the Year prize in 1998 and was made an Officer of the Order of Fiji in 1999.

She was then recognised with an Australian Sports Medal in 2000, before becoming head coach of the England team in the same year.

Hoornweg also has a good track record in Australian and New Zealand franchise netball, having spent several successful seasons at the Melbourne Vixens, where she won a league title and led her side to two grand finals.

Gold Coast 2018 will run between April 4 and 15.
