Corey Wedlock and Kristina Krstic made a strong start to the World Youth Bowls Championships at Broadbeach Bowls Club in Australia.

The home  mixed pair claimed victory in their four matches on the first day of competition at the venue due to host lawn bowls competition at the Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast in April.

They began with a comfortable 36-4 win over Turkey’s Alara Tosuner and Sercan Yanik, before emerging as 16-8 winners over Malaysia’s Connie Rixon and Namibia’s Cabous Olivier.

Wedlock and Krstic’s form continued with a 22-10 victory against New Zealand’s Tayla Bruce and Keanu Darby.

The Australians completed a perfect day by beating Piwen Karkar and Gariga Babona of Papua New Guinea 18-14.

The four wins leave them top of the section one rankings on 12 points, with Guernsey's Sophie and Connor Rabey second on nine.

Scotland’s Ryan Burnett and Shae Wilson of the Norfolk Islands are currently leading the section two standings.

The pairing earned three victories on the opening day to secure nine points.

Their record is matched by Australia’s Ellen Ryan and Aaron Teys, although the local pair are second due to a lower number of shots.

Men's, women's and mixed pairs competitions are taking place at the Championships and which is due to continue tomorrow.
