World Taekwondo (WT) President Chungwon Choue has described the joint-Korean performance of taekwondo demonstration teams at Pyeongchang 2018 as a "historic moment".

The performance came prior to the Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics on February 9, featuring taekwondo practitioners from North and South Korea.

It was arranged as part of a Winter Olympic participation deal reached with North Korea last month, which was negotiated at the demilitarized zone (DMZ).

A demonstration team from hosts South Korea, representing WT, and one from North Korea wearing the colours of the International Taekwondo Federation (ITF), participated at the Opening Ceremony.

They then united for a second exhibition event on February 10.

WT is based in Seoul and runs the Olympic version of the sport.

The ITF's headquarters are located in Vienna.

Choue believes the events have shown that sport can bring people together with political tensions between the two Koreas remaining high.

"It is a historic moment for World Taekwondo and the International Taekwondo Federation and the Korean Peninsula," said Choue.

"At a time of growing global tensions, the joint performance of the WT and ITF demonstration teams in Pyeongchang and the subsequent march of the Unified Korean Olympic Team at the Pyeongchang 2018 Opening Ceremony sent out a strong message that sport has the power to bring countries together and open up dialogue."

World Taekwondo claim the demonstration set the tone for an Opening Ceremony which sent out a strong message of peace to the world.

An ITF demonstration team previously joined counterparts from World Taekwondo for a performance at the 2015 World Taekwondo Championships in Chelyabinsk, Russia and at the 2017 event in Muju, South Korea.

A discussion over a joint performance at Pyeongchang 2018 was claimed to have taken place in Muju.

Two further demonstration events have also taken place in South Korea's capital city Seoul.
