An investigation has been launched after a 55-year-old South Korean was found dead in his room at the Media Village in Gangneung during the Winter Olympic Games here.

The man, who has not yet been named but whose surname is reportedly Kim, was found at 6:45am local time by police.

The exact circumstances of the death of the man have not been revealed.

South Korean news agency Yonhap reported he had complained of chest pains after dining with co-workers last night.

The man was providing translation support for Japanese press covering Pyeongchang 2018.

Pyeongchang 2018 spokesperson Sung Baik-you confirmed the man had passed away and said a full inquiry would be launched by local authorities.

"A man in his 50s in the Media Village was the one who died and he was working for the Japanese broadcasting coalition," said Sung.

"The roommate tried to wake him up and he wasn't moving, so the roommate called the police and the police came and evacuated this person to the hospital, and found out he was already dead.

"He was a Korean person who was assisting the duties of the Japanese broadcasting coalition.

"We are trying to find out the cause of the death."

The Media Village, home to hundreds of international journalists, is located in Gangneung.

The coastal city is where ice sports such as skating, curling and ice hockey are taking place during the Games.
