Jupha Somnet delighted the home crowd on the opening day of the Asian Track Cycling Championships in Kuala Lumpur.

The Malaysian cyclist produced an impressive performance in the women's elite points race at the Velodrom Nasional Malaysia.

Jupha launched a solo attack during the 80-lap race, which saw her earn 20 points by lapping the field.

It contributed heavily to her eventual success, with the Malaysian winning the race on a final total of 35.

She was followed by Hong Kong's Xiaojuon Diao and Taiwan's Ke Xin Zeng, who scored 25 and 21 points respectively.

"I took my time at the start as I wanted to see how the race was going to play out," Jupha told the New Strait Times.

"Once I saw they were tired I took my chance and lapped them, and that helped me get back in the competition and from there I used my experience as best possible.

"Obviously, I am very happy to win this as I have never won a gold at the ATC before."

The 24-year-old, who earned silver and bronze medals at the 2016 edition of the Championships, has expressed her hope the gold medal will lead to her being selected for Malaysia's team for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

South Korea triumphed in the men's team sprint competition, with their team achieving a time of 44.049sec.

They held off the challenge of Japan in the final, with their opponents ending in 44.063 for silver.

China earned the bronze medal in the event.

Their women’s sprint team would, however, claim gold by ending in a time of 32.817.

South Korea and Japan rounded off the podium places.

Competition is set to continue tomorrow.
