The President of the Rwanda Taekwondo Federation, Placide Bagabo, has said the organisation are looking to integrate female athletes with disabilities into the sport.

Bagabo, who recently replaced David Hakizimana as President of the organisation, said the aim of the promotion was to increase the number of female taekwondo athletes in the African nation.

The idea is that they will eventually be able to represent Rwanda both at regional, continental and international competitions.

As reported by New Times, Bagabo said: "We only have one female, Consolee Rukundo, on the national team, which is why we have decided to make the modification to the sport to best serve and give an opportunity to females with disabilities so that they can take centre stage."

"We believe it [taekwondo] should be accessible to all and particularly the disabled.

"We understand it is a challenge given other factors but we need to give them a chance since taekwondo is limitless."

Bagabo also said that taekwondo has "no boundaries" and does not discriminate against ability, age, religion or sexual orientation.

Taekwondo will make its debut on the programme at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
