Norway's Johannes Thingnes Bø and Sweden's Hanna Oberg won gold medals in contrasting fashion in individual biathlon races at Pyeongchang 2018 today.

Bø's was one of perfect skiing papering over missed shots while Oberg shot flawlessly throughout.

The Norwegian missed two shots across his four rounds of shooting in the men's 20 kilometres event but had sufficient speed to hold off Jakov Fak of Slovakia.

He finished in 48min 3.80sec to triumph by 5.5 seconds.

Dominik Landertinger of Austria, like Fak, shot perfectly but had settle for third, 14.2 seconds off the winning pace.

Defending champion Martin Fourcade of France led at the halfway stage but slipped out of contention after two missed shots and eventually finished fifth.

He had been hoping to become the first man to defend an Olympic title in the event for 46 years after winning the 12.5km pursuit title earlier this week.

Each missed shot means an extra minute added to the athlete's times.

Sweden's Oberg posted a blistering time of 41:07.20 in the corresponding women's 15km race.

It was a major shock from an athlete only ranked 58th in this year's World Cup standings.

Slovakia's Anastasiya Kuzmina finished 24.7 seconds behind in second place.

Germany's Laura Dahlmeier was third.

Dahlmeier, who has already won 7.5 km sprint and 10km pursuit events this week, never fully recovered after a miss on the opening shooting round but fought hard to finish third.

She crossed 41.2 seconds behind Oberg.
