Pyeongchang 2018 closed the Gangneung Olympic Park to spectators for the majority of the afternoon and the entire evening for safety reasons because of strong winds in the coastal region.

Organisers suspended all outside activities and ended general admission to the Park, the home of ice sports at the Winter Olympics here, at 4:30pm local time.

The move came as strong gusts swept the Olympic Park, causing damage to temporary structures such as security fencing and venue media centres.

Those who were in attendance at venues across the Park were urged to seek shelter by organisers, while emergency alerts delivered to mobile phones warned of the possibility of flying debris and falling objects.

Pyeongchang 2018 later clarified that the issue did not effect the competition scheduled as all events in Gangneung were held as planned.

It meant, however, that events taking place in the evening sessions were only watched by those already inside the Olympic Park as no extra spectators were granted entry.

"Due to high winds in the Gangneung area, all activities in the common domain of the Gangneung Olympic Park have been temporarily been suspended to ensure the safety of all personnel," a statement from Pyeongchang 2018 read.

"Spectators are being encouraged to stay indoors and general admission to the park has been suspended for the remainder of the day.

"Venue Media Centres that are in temporary structures are also closed until the high winds subside, with media continuing to work from the press tribune areas.

"Precautionary measures are being taken as safety remains a paramount priority for Pyeongchang 2018."

The closure of the Olympic Park came after several competitions were affected by strong winds blowing in and around the region.

After the women's slalom was postponed and rescheduled for tomorrow, organisers confirmed the women's 15 kilometres biathlon would be held tomorrow instead of today.

The Nordic combined was also hit by minor delays during both the ski jumping and cross-country sections of the event.
