Thai Duty-Free giant King Power have been confirmed as the title sponsor of the inaugural Wheelchair Rugby Quad Nations tournament in Leicester.

King Power are owners of Leicester City Football Club and have now put their support behind the Britain’s wheelchair rugby team.

The host nation are set to take place in a four team competition at the Leicester Arena, due to take place between March 9 and 11.

It will feature two-time Paralympic gold medallist and reigning world champions Australia, along with Rio 2016 silver medallists, United States.

Japan, who rounded off the podium at the Paralympics, complete the list of teams as they build towards Tokyo 2020.

"King Power is at the heart of Leicester’s sporting community and we are very excited about them joining us as our title partner," said David Pond, Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby chief executive.

"We have already been bowled over by the support for the event by the Leicester community and to have such a big name supporting the tournament is fantastic.

"GBWR is really excited that we can stage this tournament in Leicester.

"t’s critical that we play the top teams in the world if we are to be medal contenders at the World Championships in the summer.

"Leicester has been an important training venue for us and with Leicester Tigers Wheelchair Rugby in the city we are hoping for lots of support for GB."

All four teams will play each other over the first two days before the pool leaders go forward to the final on the last day of competition, while a bronze medal match will also take place.

The tournament will be sanctioned by the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation.

Jonathan Coggan, Ryan Cowling, Myles Pearson, Chris Ryan, Ayaz Bhuta, James Roberts, Aaron Phipps, Stuart Robinson have all been selected for the British team.

They will join Nicholas Cummins, Muhammed Islam, Gavin Walker and Jamie Stead all of whom play for the Leicester Tigers wheelchair rugby team.

It is hope the high standard of competition could help European champions Britain prepare to challenge for medals at the World Championships later in the year.

A medal could potentially offer the chance for the team to gain further support from UK Sport towards Tokyo 2020, having been given a travel grant to the World Championships.

The World Championships, which will be hosted in Sydney this summer, are scheduled for August 5 to 10.

UK Sport granted the country's governing body £50,000 ($71,000/€57,000) to cover the cost of the Championships.

Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha, King Power chief executive, stated the organisation were looking forward to support the Quad Nations event.

"We’re extremely proud to support the inaugural Quad Nations tournament and to continue to promote the development of world-class sport in Leicester," he said.

"For generations, the passion of the people of Leicester has made the city one of the UK’s sporting strongholds, both for established and emerging sports.

"Quad Nations Wheelchair Rugby will be a fine addition to Leicester’s culture of international sporting excellence."
