The Netherlands began here tonight in the same vein as they left off in Sochi four years ago as Carlijn Achtereekte led home a 1-2-3 finish in the women's 3,000 metres speed skating at Pyeongchang 2018 in front of a crowd that included King Willem-Alexander.

There were no surprises about the Dutch domination but the winner was a shock as Achtereekte claimed the first major title of her career at the Gangneung Oval.

The 28-year-old, whose previous best performance was a silver medal in the 5,000m at the 2015 World Single Distance Championships, clocked a stunning 3min 59.21sec.

It made just the third women to break the four minute barrier at sea level.

It proved enough for her to stun defending champion and team-mate Ireen Wüst, who finished 0.08 seconds behind in second place after losing a lead of one second on the final lap.

Antoinette de Jong completed the clean sweep in third, clocking 4:00.02.

Czech Republic's Sochi 2014 silver medallist Martina Sáblíková finished fourth a further 0.52 seconds behind.

The Netherlands won 23 out of 36 speed skating medals at Sochi 2014 and with athletes like Achtereekte in their ranks it again demonstrated the team's strength in depth.

"The athletes took me into account, but not the press and media," Achtereekte said.

"I love that role.

"I'm good at laying down a time.

"I managed that now and it has paid off."
