Indonesia surprised defending champions and favourites China with a 3-2 victory in the women's tournament at the Badminton Asia Team Championships in Alor Setar.

It means the Indonesians have gone through to the quarter-finals at the top of Group Z, but the Chinese still progress as runners-up.

Fitriani got Indonesia off to the perfect start as she beat China's Chen Yufei 16-21, 21-12, 21-15 at the Sultan Abdul Halim Stadium in the Malaysian city.

Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahay then made it 2-0 as they won their doubles rubber against Du Yue and Li Yinhui, 21-18, 21-12.

He Bingjiao got China on the board with a 23-21, 21-10 success over Gregoria Mariska Tunjung but the tie was settled when Indonesia won the second doubles.

That came courtesy of Della Destiara Haris and Rizki Amelia Pradipta's 21-14, 19-21, 23-21 victory over Cao Tong Wei and Yu Zheng.

Chen Xiaoxin beat Ruselli Hartawan 21-17, 21-17 but it was just a consolation point for the Chinese.

Indonesia will now play India in the last eight, as they qualified second from Group W.

Japan won the three-team pool and beat the Indians 4-1 today to set-up a meeting with Chinese Taipei.

China will play Group Y winners Thailand, who were 3-2 victors over hosts Malaysia today, who also qualified.

The home side will meet Group X winners South Korea in the last eight after they thrashed Chinese Taipei 5-0 to end their group stage.

In the men's event, favourites China thrashed Hong Kong 5-0 to top Group A.

South Korea maintained their 100 per cent start in Group B as they edged Japan 3-2 to top the pile.

In Group C, hosts Malaysia roared past Chinese Taipei 5-0 to go through as winners.

Group D was won by defending champions Indonesia, who pipped India 3-2.

China will face India in the last eight, with Malaysia squaring off against Hong Kong.

Japan will meet Indonesia with South Korea playing Thailand.

The quarter-finals will be played tomorrow.
