Taekwondo Malaysia are aiming to become the first South East Asian country to establish a taekwondo academy.

The organisation's President Tan Sri S.A. Vigneswaran has expressed his desire to achieve the feat, but acknowledged the plans still require the approval of the Malaysian Government.

He claimed the idea was first suggested to Taekwondo Malaysia by World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue.

"Malaysia will be the first country in South East Asia to have a taekwondo academy," Vigneswaran told Malaysian website The Star.

"It'll be a platform to produce talented exponents.

"We hope to get the approval from the Government, Youth and Sports Ministry and also the National Sports Council to build it."

The official made the assertion as the country prepares to host the World Taekwondo Malaysia event in March.

The competition is set to form part of the qualification process for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics Games.

More than 300 athletes are expected to attend the event, which will run from March 1 to 4.

Malaysia are also expected to show their support to the Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF), which was established back in 2015.

The organisation are set to hold a run later this month, which will aim to raise funds for the THF.

The THF aims to teach taekwondo and stage educational programmes with refugees and displaced people around the world.

Projects are underway in countries such as Jordan, Rwanda, Turkey, Djibouti and Nepal.
