Denmark's Sofie Skoubo believes her side have the qualities to beat the best as she prepares to be the lone female on her country's squad for this year's International Wheelchair Rugby Federation World Championship in Sydney.

Skoubo is the only woman on the Danish team for the event, due to begin in the Australian city on August 5.

She is one of a number of players selected as part of a concerted effort to rebuild a squad which failed to qualify for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Denmark are among eight countries to have qualified for the World Championship.

Australia, Canada, France, Great Britain, Japan, Sweden and the United States have also booked a place at the tournament.

A further four nations will seal a spot at the competition during a qualification event in Nottwill in Switzerland in April.

"As we are the underdogs at the Worlds, I believe we have an element of surprise," Skoubo said to the International Paralympic Committee.

"I am really looking forward to meeting the best teams in the world as we can learn and improve a lot from them.

"It is great for me as I get more playing time, however, it is also great for the team as we can put together a stronger line-up.

"We have a lot of work to do in the next half of the year, but we have the players to challenge the best teams."

Skoubo admitted she had her doubts as to whether she had the necessary talent to represent Denmark when she was first chosen.

"When I was contacted regarding playing for the national team, I was afraid whether I was good enough to play at that level as I had only been playing for a short amount of time," she said.

"I didn't imagine how far I would go by joining the national team."
