Russia lead the way in eight of the 10 freestyle weight categories following the publication of this year's first update to the United World Wrestling (UWW) ranking series.

The update comes on the back of the opening Greco-Roman and freestyle tournaments held last week - the Takhti Cup in Iran in Mahshahr and the Ivan Yariguin event in Russian city Krasnoyarsk respectively.

Winners of the ranking series events each received eight points, plus an additional point for every entry in their bracket.

Placement points were also awarded to the rest of the top-five finishers, ranging from six for the runners-up to two for the those ending in fifth place.

Among the Russians topping their freestyle rankings are Zavur Uguev, Gadzhimurad Rashidov and Ilias Bekbulatov at 57 kilograms, 61kg and 65kg respectively.

All three have 18 points to their names.

The other Russians at the summit are Magomed Kurbanaliev at 70kg, Khetik Tsabolov at 74kg, Akhmed Gadzhimagomedov at 79kg, Abdulrashid Sadulaev at 92kg and Muradin Kushkhov at 125kg.

Kushkhov has 18 points, while Kurbanaliev has 17, Tsabolov has 16 and both Gadzhimagomedov and Sadulaev have 15.

The United States occupy first place in the two other freestyle weight categories with David Taylor heading the 86kg rankings on 20 points and Kyle Snyder leading the 97kg standings on 17.

In the Greco-Roman world rankings, Iran have three wrestlers looking down on their rivals.

Mohammadali Geraei finds himself in first place at 77kg with 16 points, while Saman Azizi tops the 87kg standings on 15 and Behnam Arpatapeh the 130kg rankings on 12.

Turkey are one of three nations with two wrestlers in pole position, courtesy of Ekrem Ozturk at 55kg and Emrah Kus at 82kg.

Kyrgyzstan’s ranking leaders are Kanybek Zholchubekov at 60kg and Kaly Sulaymanov at 63kg, while Kazakhstan's are Almat Kebispayev at 67kg and Demeu Zhadrayev at 72kg.

Azerbaijan's Orkhan Nuriyev is the 97kg frontrunner.

The next ranking series events are scheduled for later this month, with women's wrestling opening its season at the Klippan Lady Open in Sweden from February 16 to 18.

Greco-Roman wrestlers have their second event at the Granma y Cerro Pelado in Cuba's capital Havana from February 15 to 23.

Points will be automatically uploaded on the UWW homepage following the conclusion of all ranking series events, Continental and World Championships.

The UWW announced in December of last year that it will debut an annual ranking series in 2018.

The concept sees four speciality ranking tournaments held in each of the three Olympic disciplines - Greco-Roman, freestyle and women's.

Athletes will be able to accumulate ranking points with major events such as the World Championships and the Continental Championships also counting.

This year will see the series undergo a "soft launch" with full implementation expected in 2019.
