Pakistan were awarded third place at the International Cricket Council Under-19 World Cup after their contest with Afghanistan was washed out without a ball being bowled in Queenstown.

Heavy overnight rainfall and persistent morning drizzle ended any chance of the third-place play-off taking place at the John Davies Oval.

Pakistan were given the victory after they finished top of Group D, one spot higher than opponents Afghanistan.

The overnight rain on the ground meant it was unlikely play would go ahead and an inspection confirmed the abandonment 45 minutes prior to the scheduled start.

Pakistan’s nine-wicket victory over Ireland and the European side's subsequent four-wicket win against Afghanistan in the group stage proved crucial.

It saw Pakistan's run-rate climb above that of Afghanistan's and earned them top spot in the group.

The tournament in New Zealand concludes with the final between Australia and India at the Bay Oval in Tauranga on Saturday (February 3).

India, runners-up at the 2016 tournament in Bangladesh, and Australia will both be bidding to secure the Under-19 World Cup title for the fourth time.

India triumphed in 2000, 2008 and 2012, while Australia lifted the trophy in 1988, 2002 and 2010.

The Indian side also thrashed Australia by 100 runs in the opening match of the tournament.
