The Guatemalan Olympic Committee (COG) has signed a cooperation agreement with the Ministry of Education in the Central American nation.

As part of the deal, the fundamental principles of Olympism and its values will be taught to children at primary and secondary schools.

COG President Gerardo Aguirre was on hand to sign the partnership, which continues a close relationship between both parties.

"As an Olympic Committee, we have the responsibility to transmit Olympic values and sport is a means to transform a society, especially in the formation of those values among children and young people," said Aguirre.

"It is satisfactory and we thank the Ministry of Education for the opportunity, we hope to be useful."

Guatemala has won only one Olympic medal in its history - a silver at London 2012.

This came courtesy of Erick Barrondo who was second in the men's 20 kilometres race walk.

The country sent 21 athletes to compete at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
