Olympic Clubs are being set up in Liberia to help youngsters learn more about the history of the Games and for them to develop a greater interest in them.

The initiative is being driven by the Liberia National Olympic Committee (LNOC) and funded by the International Olympic Committee.

Several Olympic Clubs already exist in Liberia's capital Monrovia but they have now been extended to Bomi County.

"The students will be taught the goal of the Olympic Movement, the history of the Olympic Games, as well as the International Olympic Committee and Olympic solidarity," LNOC vice-president Sylvester Rennie told the Daily Observer in Liberia.

"It is our hope that after establishing these clubs in the five counties, the interests of these students will arise to participate in the Olympic Games."

The students will also be educated on the virtues of sports, fair play, and understanding between peoples and the contribution of Olympism to world peace, Rennie revealed.

Teaching sessions on themes linked to Olympic education are also planned.

There will also be various sports competitions developed for children aged between six and 17 and there will be artistic and literary activities

The establishment of Olympic Clubs is sponsored by the International Olympic Committee.

The LNOC also recently donated more sports equipment to schools in Monrovia.

Liberia made its debut in the Olympics at Melbourne in 1956 and has competed at every Games Since Atlanta 1996.

The country is still waiting to win its first medal.
