The joint Korean women's ice hockey team put together for next month's Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang held their first practice today.

South Korea's head coach, Canadian Sarah Murray, is in charge of the team of 35 players, made up of 23 from the South and 12 from the North.

But North Korea has also sent along its own coach, Pak Chol-ho, to help.

The players and coaches held the session at the Jincheon National Training Center in Jincheon, 90 kilometers south east of South Korea's capital Seoul.

The North Korean players had arrived on Thursday (January 25) but had been holding separate training sessions. 

Murray divided the squad into Team A and Team B, who trained in different groups this morning, before coming together for a scrimmage in the evening. 

The rest of the women's teams competing at Pyeongchang 2018 are restricted to 23 players.

But for the games during the tournament the unified Korean team will, like their rivals, being only allowed to use 22 players.

South Korea has 14 forwards, six defencemen and three goaltenders. 

North Korea brought seven forwards, four blueliners and one goalie. 

The joint team are currently due to have only one warm-up match before the Olympics start.

That is an exhibition game against Sweden in Incheon next Sunday (February 4). 

Korea's first match in the Olympics is due to be against Switzerland, the world's sixth-ranked team, on February 10.

They are then due to play Sweden on February 12 and Japan on February 14.
