Hélène Noesmoen rose from fourth to first place in a dramatic women's R:SX medals race as action concluded across five classes today at the Sailing World Cup in Miami.

The French sailor took advantage of stronger winds on Biscayne Bay, just off Coconut Grove in the Florida city, as she reached speeds in excess of 20 knots.

Noesmoen crossed first in the medal race, where points count double, to win the overall series by just one point from Italy's Flavia Tartaglini.

Spain's Blanca Manchon finished a further point behind in third place.

Russia's Olympic bronze medallist Stefania Elfutina, the series leader at the beginning of the day, caught the edge of her board after leaping off a wave on the first downwind leg and crashed into the water.

She could only recover to eighth place in the medals race, meaning she slid down the leaderboard to fourth overall, seven points behind the winner.

"Today was windy, and I think that is my strong point," said Noesmoen.

"I tried to keep consistent during the week and really push myself in the medal race, and it paid off.

"I had a bad second day, I think that was due to the wind conditions, which dropped me to the middle of the [results] table.

"But I had an amazing third day, which kept me in the top 10 and allowed me to compete at the medal race."

Louis GIard of France won the corresponding men's event on 21 points overall.

The Netherlands' Kiran Badloe was second, on 34 points, five in front of another Frenchman in Pierre Le Coq in third.

Five of the six reigning Olympic medallists featured on the Nacra 17 podium.

Australia's Rio 2016 silver medallists Jason Waterhouse and Lisa Darmanin triumphed on 16 points, 23 clear of Olympic champion Santiago Lange and Cecilia Carranza Saroli of Argentina.

Rio 2016 bronze medallist Thomas Zajac of Austria, sailing with new team-mate Barbara Matz, finished third on 49 points.

There was a British win in the 49er men's class as Dylan Fletcher-Scott and Stuart Bithell's total of 50 points proved enough for a one-point victory over Spain's medal race winners Diego Botin le Chever and Iago Lopez Marra.

Spain also secured third place courtesy of Federico and Arturo Alonso-Tellechea, who managed 65 points.

Germany's Victoria Jurczok and Anika Lorenz won the 49erFX class, with 14 points, to beat Norwegian twins Ragna and Maia Agerup, second with 38, and Austria's Tanja Frank and Lorena Abicht, third with 42.

Medal races in the five remaining classes - laser, laser radial, men's and women's 470 and Finn - are due to take place tomorrow.
