World champion Viktor Axelsen withdrew injured as second round matches were played at the Badminton World Federation Indonesia Masters in Jakarta.

The Danish top seed injured his foot mid-match at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno venue.

He was trailing Japan's Kazumasa Sakai 22-20, 11-7 when he decided to retire.

It means that China's Olympic champion and third seed Chen Long is the highest ranked player left in the draw.

Chen reached the quarter-finals by beating Thailand's Suppanyu Avihingsanon 21-13, 21-8.

Chinese Taipei's sixth seed Chou Tien-chen also advanced thanks to a 21-16, 21-17 win over France's Brice Leverdez.

In the women's draw, Spain's Olympic champion Carolina Marin was among those to reach the last eight as she beat Danish qualifier Line Kjærsfeldt 21-10, 21-15.

Chinese Taipei's top seed Tai Tzu-ying joined the number three seed in the next round by beating her compatriot Lee Chia-hsin 21-14, 21-13.

India's PV Sindhu, the second seed and Olympic silver medallist, defeated Malaysia's Goh Jin Wei 21-12, 21-9.

Japan's world champion Nozomi Okuhara also went through as she saw off Pai Yu-po of Chinese Taipei 21-19, 21-18.

Quarter-final matches will be played tomorrow.
