Reigning world champions Germany were paired with France and The Netherlands as the draw for the new UEFA Nations League was conducted in Lausanne today.

Germany, France and The Netherlands were drawn together in group one of League A, the top tier of the inaugural tournament.

Group two features Belgium, Switzerland and Iceland, while group three is comprised of UEFA Euro 2016 winners Portugal, Italy and Poland.

England, Croatia and 2010 World Cup winners Spain were placed into group three.

The countries who win each group in the top tier, comprised of the 12 highest ranked European nations, will progress to the knock-out finals in June of next year.

One of the finalists - to be appointed by the UEFA Executive Committee in December - will act as host of the finals, scheduled to take place from June 5 to 9.

Those who finish bottom of their respective group will be relegated to League B.

The trophy was also unveiled during the draw ceremony, staged at the SwissTech Convention Center.

The tournament is due to get underway with the first set of matches in September.

The teams in each group will play home and away in a 10-week period from September to November.

All 55 UEFA member associations will take part in the Nations League, which aims to replace most international friendly matches in Europe with games pitting national teams of broadly comparable ability against one another.

The four teams who win each group in League B and League C will be promoted to the division above, with the bottom four relegated to the division below.

League D, which includes the lowest 16 ranked European sides, will only offer promotion.

The competition will be held in each season where there is not a World Cup or European Championship.

Each league in the Nations League will also be allocated a spot at the European Championships of 2020, through a play-off system.
