The United States made themselves the favourites to take the overall team title at the 2018 International Surfing Association (ISA) World Longboard Surfing Championship with excellent performances on Riyue Bay in Wanning today.

After yesterday's cancellation due to a lack of swell, the penultimate day of competition on the Chinese beach kicked off with a building swell in the knee to waist high range.

The world's best longboarders dropped excellent scores throughout the day, demonstrating the high level of talent present at the event.

Despite losing in the repechage rounds, Kevin Skvarna and Tony Silvagni of the US were able to regain their composure and advance in the competition, making their side the only team to have all four competitors remaining in the event.

US athlete Tory Gilkerson, who qualified for the women’s final, said: "Our team is going really well.

"We all know each other on the team and have travelled together a lot, so our camaraderie will be key heading into the final day."

The closest challengers to the US are Australia, who are currently 410 points behind after Declan Wyton was eliminated from the event.

England are currently third.

In terms of individual performances, Kai Sallas of Hawaii, who compete separately from the US, registered the top score of the day with 9.67 for his effort.

China's first-ever competitor at an ISA event, Guo Shujuan, bowed out of the competition today in the women's repechage third round.

"I've learned so much from this competition," she said.

"I've been paying attention to the skills, manoeuvres, and techniques of the world's best longboarders."

The competition will finish with the finals tomorrow.
