A draw was enough for Zambia to finish top of Group A ©CAF

Zambia will enter the quarter-finals as a top seed at the African Nations Championship after finishing top of their group following a 1-1 draw with Namibia in Casablanca.

Heading into the match at Stade Mohamed V, both teams knew that a win would see them win Group B and set up a tie with Sudan, the unseeded team from Group A, in the quarter-finals.

Zambia, however, held the advantage as they were leading the group on goal difference, meaning a draw was enough for them.

With this being the case, Namibia went at the Zambian team from the start and broke the deadlock in the 13th minute courtesy of Absalom Iimbondi's well-directed header from a deep free-kick.

This put the onus back on Zambia who equalised just two minutes later through Lazarous Kambole, who fired his second goal of the tournament into an empty net after a perfect pull-back from Ernest Mbewe.

Although there were no goals in the second half, it was certainly full of attacking play with Namibia registering five shots whilst Zambia had ten attempts on goal.

Both sides, however, were guilty of missing several chances.

The easiest fell to Namibia’s Itamunua Keimuine, who could only fire straight at Zambian goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata when presented with an excellent opportunity.

The draw meant Zambia topped the group and will now face Sudan whilst Namibia will take on hosts Morocco, who won Group A.

The other match of the day, at Stade de Marrakech, saw Uganda and Ivory Coast battle it out to avoid the unwanted fate of finishing bottom of the group.

The two sides could only play out a goalless draw, meaning Ivory Coast finish bottom of the group due to their inferior goals for record.

This brought an especially sorry campaign to a close for the Ivorians, who failed to find the back of the net once in their three matches.

Tomorrow sees the final matches in Group C take place with Nigeria and Rwanda hoping to top the group.

The tournament is for African based players.
