Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon achieved a surprise victory in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Malaysia Masters women’s final by overcoming world number one Tai Tzu Ying in Bukit Jalil today.

Intanon took control of the match by winning the opening game 21-16, but Taiwan’s Tai stormed back by triumphing 21-14 in the second at the Axiata Arena. 

The pair proved evenly matched throughout the decider, but Intanton eventually emerged as a 21-16, 14-21, 24-22 winner in this HSBC BWF World Tour Super 500 event.

World champion Viktor Axelsen led Danish success by winning a tightly contested men’s final.

Axelsen appeared on course for a comfortable victory in the final against Japan’s Kenta Nishimoto, after winning the opening game 21-13.

The second game proved a closer affair, with Nishimoto battling back to force the tie into a decider by edging his opponent 23-21.

Axelsen regained control of the tie, as the Dane eventually came through to secure a 21-13, 21-23, 21-18 win.

Further Danish success came in the women’s doubles event, with Kamilla Rytter Juhl and Christinna Pedersen earning a 22-20, 21-18 win over top seeds Chen Qingchen and Kia Yifan of China.

Chinese players also suffered defeat in the mixed doubles final as Zheng Siwei and Huang Yaqiong were unable to build on winning the first game of the final.

Hong Kong’s Tang Chun Man and Tse Ying Suet came from behind to claim a 19-21, 22-20, 21-18 in another close encounter.

A thrilling men’s doubles final brought the tournament to a close.

Indonesia’s Fajar Alfian and Muhammed Rian Ardianto lost the opening game to home favourites Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong, but battled back to win 14-21, 24-22, 21-13.
