Wales led 11-9 after the first quarter and 23-21 at half-time before the Scots edged ahead 32-31 in a close contest in the Regional Qualifier - Europe at the Perth College UHI 

The sending-off of former international footballer Nia Jones proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Scotland, with 18-year-old Sirens player Bethan Goodwin prominent, stretched away in the final quarter as Wales struggled to cope with missing a woman. 

The hosts - known as the Scottish Thistles - are now due to face Northern Ireland in their second qualifier on Sunday (January 21). 

Wales are scheduled to be back in action against Northern Ireland tomorrow afternoon. 

Two of the three teams will qualify for the 2019 World Cup in Liverpool, with hosts England having already qualified.

Also tomorrow, the Quad Series, featuring four of the top five teams in the world, will return. 

The Quad Series, features Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa and is played twice a year. 

The "Northern" leg of the competition takes place in January, where matches takes place in London and Johannesburg. 

In August the "Southern" leg of the event is due to take place with matches being held in Australia and New Zealand.

This weekend sees the first leg of the tournament begin in the Copper Box Arena on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London.

All four sides will also have one eye on the Commonwealth Games in the Gold Coast.

The opening matches tomorrow are due to see South Africa meet Australia and hosts England take on defending champions New Zealand.
