Egypt's Omar Assar was a big casualty as main draw action began today at the International Table Tennis Federation Hungarian Open.

The number three men's seed was dumped out at Budapest Olympic Hall, losing in straight games to China's Xu Chenhao.

It was a case of history repeating for the Egyptian who also exited the first World Tour tournament of the year at the opening round stage in 2017.

Xu triumphed today 11-7, 11-4, 11-8, 16-14.

"Today I played my strong, aggressive attacking game," said Xu, who had to come through qualifying.

"I feel I am in good shape."

China's top seed Fan Zhendong cruised through to the last 16 as he knocked out compatriot Xue Fei in straight games.

The world number two, who beat top ranked Dimitrij Ovtcharov of Germany to win last month's World Tour Grand Finals in Astana, came through 11-5, 11-7, 11-2, 11-5.

Number two seed Chuang Chih-yuan also progressed after winning in five against Austria's Stefan Fegerl.

The Chinese Taipei veteran was an 11-8, 11-8, 11-4, 5-11, 11-6 victor.

In women's competition, China's top seed and world number one Chen Meng was among those to make the next round.

She beat Russia's Olga Vorobeva 11-6, 11-2, 11-5, 7-11, 11-5.

Hong Kong's second seed Lee Ho-ching endured a more difficult examination as she needed six games to oust Dina Meshre of Egypt.

Lee eventually won 7-11, 11-4, 11-9, 6-11, 11-7, 11-7.

Second round action will be played tomorrow.
