Former winner Anderson through at World Indoor Bowls Championship

Former champion Stewart Anderson was among the winners as singles action continued at the World Indoor Bowls Championship at the Potters Leisure Resort in Great Yarmouth.

The Scot, the winner of the event in 2013, came through his first round clash against England's Perry Martin 2-1.

Anderson, who also won the men's pairs title in 2016, came from behind to record a 2-10, 9-5, 2-1 success.

England's Les Gillett also advanced on home soil as he saw off compatriot Simon Skelton 2-0.

Gillett won the open pairs title last year and defeated Skelton, a men's fours gold medallist in lawn bowls at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester, 11-3, 8-7.

Robert Paxton, another Englishman who won mixed pairs and men's pairs gold in 2015, went the distance against Daniel Salmon of Wales.

Paxton eventually defeated the qualifier 9-5, 6-7, 2-1.

The mixed pairs quarter finals will be played tomorrow.

When British skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won the Olympic gold medal in ice dance at Sarajevo 1984 with 12 perfect 6.0s from every judge, for their interpretation of Maurice Ravel's Boléro, an important member of their team was singer-actor Michael Crawford. Crawford, who had played Frank Spencer in British sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and the title role in the musical The Phantom of the Opera, had become a mentor to the pair in 1981 and went on to help them create their Olympic routine. Crawford said he “taught them how to act". He was present with their trainer Betty Callaway at the ringside at Sarajevo as they created one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history.
