Those selected include Natalie Geisenberger and Felix Loch, respective winners of the men's and women's individual events at Sochi 2014, as well as returning doubles champions Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt.

The quartet also teamed up four years ago to triumph in the team relay event at the Russian coastal resort.

A formidably strong women's team also contains two other athletes who have won World Cup events this season, Dajana Eitberger and Tatjana Hüfner.

World Cup medallists Andi Langenhan and Johannes Ludwig will join Loch in the men's team.

Sascha Benecken and Toni Eggert will start as favourites over Wendl and Arlt in the doubles after winning seven World Cup events so far this season.

Athletes have also been selected in figure skating and men's ice hockey.

Pairs stars Aljona Savchenko and Bruno Massot lead the figure skating team after winning bronze and silver medals at the last two editions of the World Championships.

A 30-strong men's ice hockey squad has been selected but this will eventually be whittled down to 25.

A virtual medals table for Pyeongchang 2018, produced by data experts Gracenote, saw Germany top the medals table.

Gracenote predicted at the start of this winter season that the German team would win a total of 35 medals, 14 gold, 12 silvers and nine bronze.

It would mark a vast improvement than at Sochi 2014, where Germany finished sixth in the overall standings with a total of 19 medals.

"After the many convincing achievements of our winter sports athletes in the current season, we travel very confident to Pyeongchang," said Germany's Chef de Mission, Dirk Schimmelpfennig.

"Of course we hope that many athletes in Pyeongchang can achieve their desired top form. 

"We want to orientate ourselves on the result of Sochi in order to prove the developments in the Olympic cycle in the individual sports and disciplines as well as in German winter sports."

A full squad is due to be confirmed on Tuesday (January 23).
