Six-time champion Alex Marshall suffered a shock loss to New Zealand qualifier Andrew Kelly today at the World Indoor Bowls Championships.

The Scot, who won the last of his six open singles titles in 2015, was well short of his best in a 6-5, 10-2 defeat.

He was suffering from shortness of breath and pains in his chest during the match, but it still required a superb performance by Kelly.

"I came here to win, so I won't admit to being surprised to have done so, but I am surprised at the scale of the victory," the winner told edp24.co.uk.

"I've played against Tattie [Marshall] many times all over the world, and soon realised that he was not his usual self out there today."

Mark Royal, the 13th seed, also triumphed 12-4, 10-5 against Scott Walker of Australia.
