Jan Schmid of Norway extended his lead at the top of the overall standings as he clinched his third victory of the season at the International Ski Federation Nordic Combined World Cup in Val di Fiemme.

Schmid produced a dominant display on the skis as he crossed the line eight seconds in front of the rest of the field in Italy.

The Norwegian, a multiple World Championships medallist, finished in front of Austria's Lukas Klapfer, who did enough for second place.

Fabian Rießle of Germany beat compatriot Johannes Rydzek to clinch the third and final place on the podium.

Schmid now has a total of 483 points, 76 in front of reigning world champion Rydzek, who remains his closest challenger but lost further ground on the Swiss-born Norwegian today.

Japan's Akito Watabe, who recorded a seventh-place finish, remains in third as he has 365 points.

"I am very happy today," Schmid said.

"The jumping was a hard competition but I got the starting position that I needed.

"I thought I might get caught towards the end as they were getting a bit close.

"So I was very relieved when I came through and no-one was behind me.

"I was pleased to get across the line alone and to keep the yellow bib."

The Nordic Combined World Cup season continues on Saturday (January 20) with the next event of the campaign in Chaux-Neuve in France.
