The President of the Somali National Olympic Committee (GOS) has praised the African country's football organisation.

Abdullahi Ahmed Tarabi was speaking at the Somali Football Federation's (SFF) annual general meeting.

He praised the governing body for its "outstanding" activities in 2017 and said he was "very proud" of the development work that has been carried out.

The SFF is a full member of the GOS.

"Your 2017 work plans plus the activities we witnessed and the presentations we have seen are clearly demonstrating that the SFF have done a lot of efforts and I hope more will be done next year," said Tarabi.

"What we witnessed through the year was outstanding.

"The beautifully organised AGM you have done is more praiseworthy."

Tarabi said he hoped other sports would follow the lead of the SFF.

Somalia's football team have never qualified for either the FIFA World Cup or the Africa Cup of Nations.

The country has also never won a medal at the Olympic Games in any sport.

Two track and field athletes were sent by the nation to the Rio 2016 Games.

Mohamed Daud Mohamed competed in the men's 5,000 metres with Maryan Nuh Muse racing in the women's 400m.

Britain's running legend Sir Mo Farah, the back-to-back Olympic 5,000m and 10,000m champion, was born in Somalia and moved to the United Kingdom at the age of eight.
