Scottish duo Lynne Beattie and Melissa Coutts have been awarded a wildcard beach volleyball spot to compete at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The duo received the 12th and final position available in the women's event after facing an anxious wait.

They enjoyed two top 10 finishes at International Volleyball Federation World Tour events in Sydney and Cyprus last year but missed out on securing an automatic berth at the Gold Coast 2018 European qualifying event, also in Cyprus.

"To get this opportunity is a huge reward for us, our team and our sport but we are not just satisfied with qualification," said Beattie, who captained the Great Britain indoor volleyball team to a ninth place finish at London 2012.

"We want to be the best we can possibly be when we get to the Gold Coast and now we can look forward to our preparations for that."

The duo will now feature at the first Commonwealth Games beach volleyball tournament, which is due to take place on the Coolangatta beach front from April 6 to 12.

They will join male counterparts Seain Cook and Robin Miedzybrodzki, who qualified automatically in Cyprus.

"Congratulations to Lynne and Melissa on their selection for Team Scotland 2018," added the team's Chef de Mission Jon Doig.

"It has been an anxious wait for the pair to see if Scotland would be offered one of the 12 women's places and I am delighted this has now been fully confirmed.

"They can now go into the New Year fully focused on ensuring they are ready to compete with distinction at the Games."
