The International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Goalball Committee has conducted a third series of workshops in Africa with the Lugogo Sports Centre in Uganda’s capital Kampala welcoming 72 participants from seven countries on the east of the continent.

The project aims to introduce the sport to new nations and provide additional education to improve existing goalball programmes.

Attendants from Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, and host country Uganda participated in theoretical and practical sessions.

The sessions focused on sport rules, essentials of team preparation and coaching, officiating techniques and procedures, and the administration of sport-related documentation.

Additionally, each nation was provided with balls and eyeshades they can use to help them continue to develop goalball.

After the workshops, participants had a chance to apply their new skills in the East African Championships, a male and female tournament that included nine teams and saw the Kenyan men’s and Ugandan women’s teams emerge as the winners.

Finland's Kari Räsänen is the chairman of the IBSA Goalball Committee.

Goalball tournaments have been staged at every Summer Paralympic Games since 1976.

Algeria were the only African nation to compete in the Rio 2016 events.

The county finished bottom of their men’s and women’s groups and thus failed to reach the knock-out rounds.
