Hungary beat Spain in the European preliminaries as action continued today in the International Swimming Federation (FINA) Women’s Water Polo World League.

The Hungarians triumphed 10-9 in front of a home crowd at Budapest's Hajós Alfréd Sportuszoda.

This was despite Spain, the 2017 world silver medallists, winning the last quarter 4-1.

The other game of the second round, Russia versus The Netherlands, is due to be played on Friday (December 22) in Astrakhan.

The Netherlands have three points from one match, while Hungary and Spain have the same number from two games.

Russia are yet to get off the mark having lost their opening encounter against Spain last month.

Following the conclusion of the six rounds, the top three European teams will advance to a Super Final.

The Super Final will take place from May 28 to June 2.

They will be joined for four teams from the Intercontinental Tournament and the host team.

The United States have won the event for the last four years.
