Russia’s Sergey Ridzik claimed the first victory of his career in the International Ski Federation (FIS) Freestyle Skiing Ski Cross World Cup after winning the men’s event in Montafon today.

Ridzik won the big final ahead of current World Cup leader Terence Tchiknavorian of France.

Tchiknavorian’s compatriot Jean-Frédéric Chapuis, the regining Olympic champion and three-time crystal globe winner, finished third.

Sweden’s Erik Mobaerg came fourth in the Austrian resort.

Tchiknavorian sits atop the World Cup standings with 140 points.

Ridzik is second with 129 points, while Sweden’s Viktor Andersson is third with 109.

In the women's big final, Switzerland’s Fanny Smith, the 2013 world champion, took the win ahead of Germany's Heidi Zacher.

Sweden’s Sandra Naeslund came away with the bronze medal, while France's Alizee Baron finished fourth.

Naeslund’s third-place finish ensured she maintains her World Cup lead with 260 points.

Zacher is second with 240 points, while Canada’s Brittany Phelan is third with 150.

Because of the cancellation of yesterday’s qualification programme and the early start for today’s competitions, the jury in Montafon elected to adopt an expanded heat format.

It begun with a round of 64 men and 32 women in head-to-head competition from the outset.

As it turned out, this decision ensured the avoidance of what could have been the second full cancellation in four competitions.

The Ski Cross World Cup is scheduled to resume next week in Innichen in Italy.

Qualification is due to be held on December 20 and followed by competitions on December 21 and 22.

Montafon also played host to qualification for a men’s snowboard cross event today.

Austria’s Alessandro Haemmerle finished first to the delight of the home crowd.

Germany’s Paul Berg came second, while France’s Pierre Vaultier ended up third.

Competition is scheduled for tomorrow.

Qualification and competition for women is also set to take place.
