Jordan Olympic Committee (JOC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Peace and Sport which will aim to promote sport as a tool for social development in refugee camps in the country.

The agreement was officially signed at the 10th edition of the Peace and Sport International Forum, which took place in Monaco.

Held annually, the event is designed to foster peace through sport by using campaigns promoted by some of the most well-known sporting starts and ambassadors in the world.

As part of the agreement, the JOC and its National Federations will work alongside Peace and Sport to strengthen their "Live Together" programme.

The initiative was launched by the two organisations earlier this year, alongside the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

It aims to bring together stakeholders from the world of sport and the peace-building community to work side by side for social development.

The programme is claimed to increase the quality and quantity of sport activities in refugee camps.

"I am delighted to agree this partnership with Peace and Sport that will benefit thousands of refugee children in Jordan," said Nasser Majali, JOC secretary general.

"I share the belief that sport can be a genuine and effective mechanism for building peace.

"The last ten years have brought turbulent changes around the world, which have led to a huge rise in the number of refugees worldwide.

"By working with organisations like Peace and Sport we can use the power of sport and the Olympic values to change lives and make a real difference.

"We look forward to starting work immediately, so that future generations may know peace."

The JOC promised they will provide local expertise and logistical support to the Live Together programme.

They claim the programme can play a healing role for children in refugee camps in the country, by addressing their educational, social and developmental needs.
