Panama denied hosts Nicaragua in the final of the men’s basketball tournament at the Central American Games in Managua.

Around 8,000 spectators watched the gold medal match at the Polideportivo Alexis Argüello, but despite the home support, Nicaragua came up short.

Panama would emerge from the contest as clear 72-59 winners to end top of the podium places.

Bronze was claimed by Belize, who secured a 63-58 triumph over Honduras.

Team fencing competitions began with a victory for El Salvador in the men’s epee competition, after a closely contested final.

They were able to earn a 45-36 victory over Panama, while hosts Nicaragua finished the event with the bronze.

The women’s sabre discipline also produced success for El Salvador, with their team overcoming Guatemala in the final.

Nicaragua were able to earn the bronze medal, having suffered defeat in the semi-final stage of the event.

Competition will continue tomorrow at the event, which is open to the seven countries of Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.

Around 3,500 athletes are participating at the Games, which will run until December 17.
