Olympic champion Sanne Wevers qualified in second place in the women's beam event as action continued at the International Gymnastics Federation Individual Apparatus World Cup in Cottbus.

The Dutch athlete, who won the gold medal on the beam at last year's Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, scored a total of 13.700 points to finish behind Russia's Maria Kharenkova at the Lausitz Arena.

Kharenkova was the top qualifier on the tricky apparatus as her routine yielded a score of 14.250.

Diana Varinska of Ukraine was third after she was awarded with 13.650 points for her performance.

Olympic parallel bars gold medallist Oleg Verniaiev of Ukraine also qualified on his preferred apparatus but could only manage third place.

Verniaiev, who also claimed silver in the all-around at Rio 2016, scored 14.966.

Di Tan of China topped the standings on 15.533 points, while Germany's double Olympic silver medallist Marcel Nguyen did enough for second with 15.200.

Di was also the top performer in the horizontal bar as the judges gave him 14.566 points for his routine.

The Chinese gymnast ended the qualification round at the summit of the leaderboard ahead of Hidetaka Miyachi of Japan and Germany's Andreas Bretschneider, who scored 14.400 and 14.200 respectively.

Ruiyang Qu continued the strong performance from Chinese gymnasts at the season-opening competition as he topped the pile in the vault event on 14.783 points.

Keisuke Asato of Japan's score of 14.649 saw him take second place and third was claimed by Australia's Christopher Remkes, who ended on 14.550.

The first set of finals are due to be held tomorrow before the event in the German city concludes on Sunday (November 26).
