Olympic gold medallist Oleg Verniaiev will be aiming to bounce back from his recent disappointment with a perfect start to the International Gymnastics Federation Individual Apparatus World Cup season in Cottbus this weekend.

Verniaiev, the Olympic parallel bars champion who also claimed silver in the all-around event at last year's Games in Rio de Janeiro, headlines the field for the first World Cup of the campaign.

The event in the German city, due to be held at the Lausitz Arena, begins with qualification tomorrow.

It is set to conclude with the last set of finals on Sunday (November 26).

Verniaiev comes into the competition having finished second in his preferred parallel bars event at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Montreal last month.

The Ukrainian was forced to settle for the silver medal as China's Zou Jingyuan took gold.

His compatriot Igor Radivilov is also scheduled to participate in Cottbus.

Radivilov claimed the bronze medal in the vault at the 2012 Olympic Games in London and returned from Montreal with silver on the same apparatus.

The Ukrainian duo will both be hoping to go one better when they compete over the weekend.

In the women's events, Olympic beam champion Sanne Wevers of The Netherlands is among the list of entrants.

Wevers famously took the beam title at Rio 2016 as she took advantage of a rare mishap from dominant American Simone Biles, who claimed four gold medals at the Games.

The World Cup in Cottbus is the first major event for artistic gymnasts since the World Championships in the Canadian city.
