Algeria began their women’s International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) World Championships African Qualification Tournament campaign in stunning style by thrashing Kenya in Durban.

The Algerian team won the event two years ago and produced a formidable display as the women’s competition began at the Tongaat Indoor Sports Centre.

A stunning opening two periods of the match saw them storm into a 50-0 lead at half-time against Kenya.

The scoring gradually slowed in the final two periods of the match, with Algeria eventually completing an 87-0 win.

Host South Africa celebrated victory in the second women’s tie of the day, as they emerged as 38-7 winners against Zimbabwe.

Algeria celebrated their second win in the men’s competition, with the defending champions having edged past Morocco.

They held a convincing advantage heading into the final period, but were forced to hold off a late Moroccan fightback to win 56-52.

Angola are set to meet Angola later today as they seek to maintain their winning start.

South Africa are due to play Egypt in another late match.

Seven teams are featuring in a single group of the men’s event, with the top four at the end advancing to the semi-finals.

The winners of the event will progress to the IWBF World Championships in German city Hamburg next year.

Ghana and Nigeria both withdrew from the men's competition for financial reasons.
