Richard Spooner celebrated victory in front of a home crowd as the International Equestrian Federation World Cup Jumping competition continued in Las Vegas.

The American led his horse Chatinus to victory at the South Point Equestrian Arena, following a jump off.

A total of 29 competitors took to the course, with Spooner the first rider to achieve a clean round during the event.

He was followed by compatriots Alison Robitaille and Karrie Rufer during the competition.

It set up a three-way jump off for the victory, with a shorter route for the riders to settle the final result.

Spooner went clear again and crossed the line in a time of 37.30 seconds to take the win.

"I’m just very optimistic for the future with this horse.

“It’s just absolutely blowing my mind.

"I stuck with my plan.

“I walked the course and just did what my original plan was, and it worked out.”

Robitaille ended in second place, having finished three seconds slower than the winner on Serise du Bidou.

The podium was completed by Rufer, whose horse pulled up before one of the barriers on the course.

The result placed Spooner top of the North American League standings on a total of 58 points, with fellow Americans Mandy Porter and Jenni McAllister trailing by 17.

Guadalajara will host the next North American League event, with competition scheduled to take place in Mexico on January 27.

Switzerland’s Steve Guerdat won the European Jumping World Cup leg in Stuttgart by achieving a clear round.

He repeated the feat in a jump off, recording a winning time of 48.19 seconds.

It pushed home favourite Philipp Weishaupt into second place on a time of 48.76, with team-mate Christian Ahlmann third on 49.13.
