German veteran Isabell Werth rode 12-year-old mare Weihegold to a home victory at the International Equestrian Federation Dressage World Cup in Stuttgart today.

The 48-year-old six-time Olympic gold medallist, the defending overall World Cup champion, scored 87.575 per cent as the host nation swept the podium at the Hanns Martin Schleyer Haller.

Dorothee Schneider rode Sammy Davis Jr to silver with 82.805 per cent as Helen Langehanenberg and Damsey FRH tallied 79.615 per cent for bronze.

Werth has continued a fine year after winning three gold medals at the European Championships in Gothenburg in August.

"Weihe has had such a great year, and after Gothenburg we gave her a long break but we thought it would be lovely to bring her to Stuttgart for the home crowd to see her and it was really nice," she said.

"She's only been working lightly for the last few weeks so we didn't take the full risk like we did in Aachen or Gothenburg this summer, but I'm very happy with how she went, it was a great day."

As defending overall champion, Werth does not register points on the Western European League leaderboard.

She only has to enter the World Cup qualifier events on any horse she chooses in order to gain a place at the 2018 Final in Paris.

Her victory today is her second of the season on a second horse, after she won in Lyon riding Emilio a fortnight ago.

Sweden’s Patrik Kittel still leads the way in the Western European League.
