The International University Sports Federation (FISU) has paid tribute to Italian basketball referee Gianluca Mattioli after his sudden death.
The official was in Spain for a Champions League clash between hosts CB Murcia and French side AS Monaco when he went to hospital with an infection.
He has passed away at the age of just 49.
Mattioli, an International Basketball Federation (FIBA) international referee, was heavily involved in FISU 3x3 events.
He was the chief of referees for the FISU World University 3x3 Basketball League and has been involved since the inaugural FISU 3x3 event in 2015.
In all he worked nearly 1,000 games in an officiating career that started in 1985, including more than 100 games in the EuroLeague.
"Gianluca will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of working with him during his time on and off the 3x3 basketball courts, both with FIBA and FISU," a FISU statement said.
"Our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends."
