Leonid Yakovlevich Khromenkov, a member of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of the Republic of Belarus, was honoured recently on his 70th birthday for his contribution to sport and particularly to the Olympic Movement in his country.

The first medal was awarded by the NOC "for outstanding services" and "for merits in the development of the Olympic Movement in the Republic of Belarus", while the second was presented by the State Committee of Sport and the country's Ministry of Sport and Tourism, recognising his work "for the development of physical culture and sport".

Khromenkov was marketing director of the NOC from 1996 to 2015, in which year he became first deputy chairman of "Veterans of Physical Culture and Sport", a culmination of a lifetime working in sport and public administration.

Leonid Khromenkov was born on November 10, 1947 in the village of Paporotka in the Mogilev region.

He graduated from the Gomel State University and taught PE from 1965 to 1971, before serving for three years as principal of the Klimovichi Youth Sports School.

He later worked as an instructor of the Mogilev Regional Party Committee and the Mogilev Regional Sports Committee.

In 1988 he was awarded the title of Honoured Coach of the Byelorussian Soviet Socialist Republic (BSSR), part of the old Soviet Union before its 1991 break-up into 15 republics, for organising training for Olympic champion Svetlana Baitova.

From 1990 to 1996 he held the post of deputy chairperson of the BSSR State Sports Committee.

From 1996 to 2015, Khromenkov worked in the NOC of the Republic of Belarus as a marketing director, head of the department and chief specialist of the country's Olympic House.

He is a Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences, Associate Professor of the Department of Theory and Methods of Physical Education in the Belorussian State Pedagogical University and the Sports and Tourism Management Department in the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture.
