The International Ski Federation (FIS) Ski Jumping World Cup winter season is set to begin in Wisla as the sport’s male athletes begin their quest to claim the coveted overall title.

Following HS134 qualification in the Polish town tomorrow, the team event will be held on Saturday (November 18) and the individual event on Sunday (November 19).

Defending champion Stefan Kraft of Austria is among the favourites for this season’s overall crown.

Others likely to be in contention are Poland’s Kamil Stoch and Norway’s Daniel André Tande, the respective second and third-place finishers in the 2016-2017 campaign. 

Germany’s Andreas Wellinger and Poland’s Maciej Kot are also expected to provide a strong challenge.

Due to injuries, three of the top athletes will not be able to compete in the season opener.

The start of Austrian Gregor Schlierenzauer’s campaign is temporarily delayed as a result of a slight injury.

Those of Germany’s Severin Freund and Norway's Kenneth Gangnes are already over after they both suffered Anterior Cruciate Ligament tears.

After a successful test period during this year’s FIS Grand Prix, there will be no longer be pre-qualified athletes.

Every competitor has to finish in the top 50 of the qualification in order to start the event.

The winner of the overall men’s title will be determined through 31 competitions across 18 venues.

The last of these is scheduled to take place in Planica in Slovenia on March 25.

Among the highlights of the season is the Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Games.

Four medals, three in men’s and one in women’s competition, will be awarded in the South Korean county from February 10 to 19.

The women's winter season is scheduled to begin in Norwegian town Lillehammer on November 30.
