The Taekwondo Humanitarian Foundation (THF) has hailed the progress of 15-year-old Wael, who has taken up the sport at the Azraq Refugee Camp in Jordan.

The teenager has been training at the THF's Azraq Academy since April of last year, when it first opened.

Since then he has progressed remarkably, achieving the highest rank belt out of all of the Academy students.

He is aiming to pass his 1st Dan promotion test next month and has even begun teaching other youngsters at the camp.

"Coach Yoo, Azraq Academy’s international instructor, believes that Wael has a lot of potential and can one day become an instructor himself," the THF said on their Facebook page.

"THF hopes to offer this possibility to Wael who could then train other students to become instructors, making the Academy sustainable and self-reliant."

The Azraq Refugee Camp is home to refugees who have fled the war in neighbouring Syria.

World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue officially announced his plan to establish the THF in his speech at the United Nations headquarters in New York City, on the 2015 International Day of Peace.

Its mission is to teach taekwondo and stage educational programmes with refugees and displaced people around the world.

As well as Jordan, projects are underway in countries such as Rwanda, Turkey, Djibouti and Nepal.
